The 2012 Olympics will open to the sound of the famous Hampden roar after organisers confirmed the first event of the London Olympic games will kick off in Glasgow.

Hampden Park will be the venue for the preliminary matches of the womens' football which kicks off on July 25th - two days before the official opening ceremony.

The following day the mens' football also gets underway at the same stadium.

Which sides will contest the opening games in Glasgow will not be decided until after the qualifiers which conclude in March 2012.
