Guildford Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Guildford, covering 500 square miles of Surrey, north east Hampshire, the London Borough of Kingston and a part of West Sussex. The huge Cathedral provides both focus and resource for the whole community, a venue for concerts, art and education, a place of pilgrimage, as well as stillness, prayer and daily choral worship. Guildford Castle began as a Norman motte and bailey castle, built soon after 1066. The wooden defences were replaced by stone during the 12th century, and the motte acquired first a shell keep and then the strong and unusually small tower keep. As the only royal castle in Surrey it became the centre for administration and justice, with the tower converted to use as the county gaol. The royal apartments were moved to a palace in the bailey below, which under Henry III became one of the most luxurious royal residences in England. Set in beautiful countryside, enjoy a long walk around the gardens and see the tower remains.

1779 saw the first recorded race meeting to be held on the Downs and one of today's greatest sporting spectacles was established. Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, organised a race for himself and his friends to race their three-year-old fillies over one and a half miles. The race became so successful that the following year a new race was added for colts and fillies. Such a tradition carries on where visitors are welcome all year round to their multitude of events and races.
